Persuasive Writing
1. Persuasive writing is more than just using your opinions to influence somebody's thoughts and actions; it's using FACTS and EVIDENCE in a way that convinces them to side with your beliefs.
2. Open the 209_faechners_persuasive_writing_how_to.pdf below. This document breaks down the structure of a 3 paragraph persuasive essay sentence-by-sentence and works to guide you through the writing process. You CAN choose to write a five paragraph essay if you feel you need more time to state your reasoning and persuade readers using evidence. If you choose to do this, you will have 3 body paragrphs insead of 1 between your into (first paragraph) and conclusion (final paragraph).
3. Choose a topic for your persuasive writing using ProCon.org. This website lists hundreds of current pro/con topics.
4. When finished writing your essay, proof read it OUT LOUD to make sure your sentences are all clear and easy to understand. It's better to have short, clear sentences than sentences that drag on and get more wordy than natural conversations.
ALSO...Have one other person proof read your essay. Make changes to any sentences they find confusing, and correct any errors that they spot in your writing style.
Proofing makes YOU a better writer!
