District Writing Assessment

1. Use your notes form "The Lone Ranger and Tonto...309" in order to complete this final assessment for English 3.

2. You will be writing a 5 paragraph essay using details from your reading, combined with your own well-thought-out ideas on the topics of the story. Follow the format below to create a complete, clear essay with strong ideas and evidence to prove that you read and understood the book:

Paragraph 1: Intro
sentence 1- once important sentence or quote from the story that represents the main character well.
sentence 2-Thesis statement: One sentence to introduce the purpose of your essay. Example: In this essay I will be reflecting on the novel "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven" by Sherman Alexie and using the story to better understand the internal conflicts of the main character.
sentence 3- Main Idea 1. One sentence stating an event in the book that revealed a conflict that the main character deals with.
sentence 4- Main Idea 2. A different sentence about a different event that helped you learn something new about the thoughts and feelings of the main character. 
sentence 5- Main Idea 3. One last experience that the character had in the story that helped you understand a struggle he deals with. 
sentence 6- Transition sentence that helps move us into talking in more details about the first event...

Paragraph 2: Main Idea 1
sentence 1- reintroduce the first event that helped you learn a bit more about your main character.
sentence 2 and 3- details about the event from the book. 
sentence 4 and 5- Your thoughts and perspective on how the event in the book revealed something new about your character and why that helped you as the reader understand some of his actions and challenges. 
Sentence 6-Transition into next paragraph/idea.

Paragraph 3: Main Idea 2
sentence 1- reintroduce the second event that helped you learn a bit more about your main character.
sentence 2 and 3- details about the event from the book. 
sentence 4 and 5- Your thoughts and perspective on how the event in the book revealed something new about your character and why that helped you as the reader understand some of his actions and challenges. 
sentence 6- transition into next paragraph/idea.

Paragraph 4: Main Idea 3
sentence 1- reintroduce the third event that helped you learn a bit more about your main character.
sentence 2 and 3- details about the event from the book. 
sentence 4 and 5- Your thoughts and perspective on how the event in the book revealed something new about your character and why that helped you as the reader understand some of his actions and challenges. 
sentence 6- transition into conclusion/reflection paragraph.

Paragraph 5: Conclusion
sentence 1-Restate thesis sentence from intro paragraph.
sentence 2- one sentence reviewing your first main idea.
sentence 3- one sentence reviewing your second main idea.
sentence 4- one sentence reviewing your third main idea.
sentence 5- In conclusion... how do the events, descriptions, and actions surrounding your main character in a story help you better understand him and connect with him in some way?
sentence 6-8-What can different types of readers gain by reading this book and looking at the way the main character changes/grows through his experiences? What can readers learn to do in their own lives from the actions of the character?

3. Proof read your essay and correct any unclear sentences or mistakes. Have one other person proof read your essay, and correct any errors or confusing sentences that they catch. This gives you the BEST chance at the BEST score possible once you submit this essay!

4. Share your finished essay in Google Drive with Mrs. Marcell.

Simply email your essay docuemnt to Mrs. Marcell if it is not typed in Google Drive.

This finished assignment will be worth a total of 4 (3 units for 209 / 1 units for 210) units when submitted and completed correctly.
