Watch, Learn, Practice
1. Watch the video below.
2. Learn the cut by trying it yourself. Pay attention to the peeling of the food, size of cuts, and uniformity of the final cut pieces.
I encourage you to practice with play dough and a butter knife if you have the option. NEVER use kitchen slicing knives on non-food items...it dulls the knife and creates cross-contamination.
When you feel comfortable, practice you cut on firm vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, celery or carrots. Just be sure to USE the food that you cut! Make a simple soup by putting them all into boiling broth with egg noodles! :) You could also put them into a crock-pot or oven pan with a whole chicken or roast to create a delicious meat + vegetable dinner, or the start of a stew.
3. When you feel you have mastered this cut, move on to the next assignment, but remember: you will need to record yourself doing each of these cuts in your final assessment video...so keep your skills sharp by practicing each skills as you prepare food daily.
